Signs you need garage door repair
Most doors give you warnings before they quit. A door that has gotten loud, slow, jerky, or uneven is telling you something is wearing out or out of line. A door that stops partway, reverses for no reason, or will not open or close at all needs attention before it leaves you stuck.
Misaligned safety sensors are one of the most common reasons a door will not close. The photo eyes near the floor have to see each other, and if they are bumped, dirty, or out of line, the door treats that as an obstruction and reverses. Worn rollers, loose hardware, and bent tracks show up as noise, shaking, and rough travel.
- Grinding, squeaking, or banging noises when the door runs
- Door moves slowly, jerks, or travels unevenly
- Door reverses before it closes or will not close all the way
- Door will not open, or stops partway up
- Remote or wall button works only sometimes
- Visible wear on rollers, hinges, or cables
What we do on the job
We start by running the door and watching it travel so we can see and hear where the trouble is. Then we check the springs, cables, rollers, hinges, track, and the opener, and we test the safety sensors and the auto reverse. We explain what we found and what it takes to fix it before we do the work.
We replace the worn or broken parts, realign what is out of line, and lubricate the moving parts. When we are done we run the door through a full open and close cycle and test the safety features so the door works the way it should before we leave.
What you can safely check yourself
- Clean the photo eye lenses with a soft dry cloth and make sure the two eyes point at each other.
- Check the remote and wall button batteries if the door responds only sometimes.
- Look for obvious obstructions in the track, like a rock or a tool left in the way.
- With the opener disconnected, lift the door halfway by hand. It should stay put on its own. If it falls or rises hard, the springs or balance are off and it needs service.
What you should never touch
Do not try to adjust or remove torsion springs yourself. Springs hold a lot of tension and are the most dangerous part of a garage door. Frayed or slack cables are also under load. If you see a cable off the drum or a spring that looks broken, stop using the door and call.
Residential and commercial doors
We work on residential doors and commercial doors alike. A home door that will not close is a security problem. A business door that will not open can stop work for the day. The parts and the sizes differ, but the process is the same: find the cause, fix it, and test it.
When to call right away
- The door is off its track or a roller has come out.
- The door is stuck open and you cannot secure it.
- You heard a loud bang and the door will not lift.
- The door will not close all the way and your home or business is open.

Garage Door Repair FAQ
Why is my garage door so loud all of a sudden?
Loud noise usually points to worn rollers, dry hinges, or a loose track. Sometimes a bent track or a failing opener is the cause. We run the door, find the source of the noise, and replace or lubricate the parts that need it.
Why will my garage door not close all the way?
The most common cause is misaligned or dirty safety sensors. The photo eyes near the floor must line up, or the door reverses because it thinks something is in the way. It can also be a track problem, a worn gear, or a close force setting that is off.
Is it safe to keep using a door that grinds when it runs?
It is best to stop. Grinding means metal is rubbing on metal, and running it wears parts faster and can turn a small repair into a bigger one. Have it looked at before it leaves you stuck.
How do I know if my safety sensors are misaligned?
If the door starts down and then reverses back up, or the opener lights blink, the sensors are often the cause. Check that both eyes face each other and that nothing is blocking them. If cleaning and lining them up does not fix it, call us.
Should I repair my garage door or replace it?
That depends on the door and what is wrong. Many doors just need parts or adjustment to run right again. We tell you honestly what the repair involves and whether a door is worth fixing, so you can decide with the real picture.
