How Long Will My Garage Door Springs Last?
Enter how many times a day your door opens and closes, and your spring age if you know it. You'll get a rough estimate of total spring life and how much may remain.
That is about 8 cycles a day (one open plus one close).
Estimated total spring life
3.4 years
About 1,250 days at 4 opens a day, based on a common 10,000 cycle rating.
This is a rough estimate based on a common spring rating. Your springs may be rated differently, and cold weather, balance and maintenance all affect lifespan.
When a spring does break, do not try to adjust or remove torsion springs yourself. Call or text us.
Spring Life Estimator FAQ
How does the Spring Life Estimator work?
You enter how many times a day your door opens and closes, and your spring age if you know it. Many standard springs are rated around 10,000 cycles, where one cycle is one open and one close. The tool divides the rating by your daily cycles to estimate total years, and subtracts your spring age to show roughly how much life may remain.
Is the estimate a guarantee?
No. It is a rough estimate based on a common spring rating. Your springs may be rated differently, and cold weather, balance and maintenance all affect lifespan.
Why do springs break in the winter?
Metal gets brittle in the cold, and a spring near the end of its life can snap when the temperature drops. The first cold snap of the season is a common time for springs to fail.
Should I replace both springs if only one broke?
Often yes. If one spring broke and the other is the same age, the other is usually close behind. Replacing both keeps the door balanced and saves a second call. We will tell you honestly if that does not apply to your door.
